Dr. Robert E. Raymond, 96, residing at Amsterdam Nursing Home in New York City died peacefully Wednesday evening, December 15, 2010 of natural causes. I hope he will be remembered as an avid educator and competitor who touched the lives of his many students and friends.

Born May 3, 1914 in Agawam Mass, the youngest son of the late Charles Raymond and Nellie Raymond, he resided in New York City since 2006. He was moved to NYC after suffering a debilitating stroke from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire where he and his late wife, Peggy Raymond lived after his retirement from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.

A graduate of Agawam High School, he attended and graduated from Springfield University in 1937 with a BS Degree. With graduate studies at the Hyannis Teachers' College and the University of Maine, he earned his M.S. degree from Springfield College in 1953 and his Doctor of Education degree from Boston University in 1968.

Dr. Robert Raymond received several honors recognizing his years as a professor and the Director of Athletics at Slippery Rock University including Professor Emeritus of Slippery Rock University and induction into the Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame. Earlier in his career he was the President of the Massachusetts Schools Athletic Directors' Association, a NAIA Golf Coach of the Year, a NCAA Golf Coach of the Year, and the Director of Athletics of Slippery Rock University.

His years as an educator included teaching and coaching positions in Harwich, MA (1937-1940), Bangor, ME (1940-1946) with a leave of absence to become a commissioned officer in the Navy teaching survival training to enlisted men ( 1942-1946), the University of Maine ( Brunswick Campus) (1946-1952), Methuen, MA (1950-1952), Milton, MA (1954-1968) where he was the Director of Physical Education, and Slippery Rock State College, PA ( 1968-1979)

From 1952-1954 he lived with his family and directed the year-round Girl Scout Reservation Camp called Cedar Hill in Waltham, MA.

Dr. Robert Raymond's interests extended to numerous outdoor activities including hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing, fishing, hunting, skiing, tennis, and golf. He was a Golf Professional from 1951-1995 sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game. After his retirement from Slippery Rock University, he taught golf at several golf clubs including the Province Lake Country Club, NH and the Kingswood Golf Club in Wolfeboro, NH.

He enjoyed all sorts of competitive games becoming an avid chess and bridge player. He pursued square dancing for a number of years until a knee replacement side lined him.

During his younger years he held numerous camping positions as both Counselor and Director : Waterfront Director, city of Bennington, Vermont / Rehab counselor at a private camp in Weld, Maine / Waterfront Director and guide at Camp Natarswi, a Girl Scout camp in Millinocket, Maine / Director, State of Maine Camp for Crippled Children / Co-Director of the Four Winds Girl Scout Camp, Plymouth, MA / Counselor at the wilderness camp, Keewaydin, in Temagami, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Robert Raymond was a proud member of the Bektash Shriners in the Shriner's Clown Unit. Known as "Bubbling Bob," he enjoyed marching with other Shriner clowns in many parades, old home day celebrations, and other community events throughout New England. His specialty was tying balloon animals for children.

He leaves his daughter Lynne Raymond Sakayama and son-in-law Bob Sakayama of New York City, his grandchildren Zebe Sakayama, Rue Sakayama, Amy Persinger, Sara Persinger, Corey Persinger Ford, Ben Persinger Ford, Martha Persinger, and Tina Persinger along with various nephews and nieces. His older daughter, Pat Persinger, and his wife of 59 years, Peggy Raymond, are deceased.
